The premise of the book is that Gregory Heisler discusses 50 portraits, creating a essay for each photograph and often contrasting the image, with a second image from the same shoot. The first part of each essay is about the shoot itself, telling a story as much about the photographer Portrait of the 50s book his thoughts about a shoot and often the story behind it/5().

I ordered both books by John Kobal - portraits of the 40's and portraits of the 50's. They are great books for any student of portraiture, fashion design or photography because they are filled with black and white photos, very little text. There are the big name stars in this book, Crawford, Gardner, Hayworth, but also some of the names that /5(28).

'50 Portraits: Stories and Techniques from a Photographer's Photographer' is remarkably open and honest, both from emotional/personal and technical/photographic points of view.

And as beautiful as the photography is, you will not find the pictures the main takeaway from the book/5(). "50 Portraits" is a wonderfully constructed book which shows, in fifty examples, the thought processes of the photographer whom David Hobby calls the greatest living portraitist.

Hobby's endorsement on his Strobist blog is what brought this book to my attention, and also no doubt thousands of his other followers/5(32). This cultural who's-who illuminates 50 famous figures, from Leonardo da Vinci to Coco Chanel, through the fascinating trivia of their lives.

Artist James Gulliver Hancock depicts historical icons in quirky annotated portraits surrounded by their associated possessions, baggage, and foibles/5. Gregory Heisler’s 50 Portraits is the best portrait photography book I own.

And that's saying a lot. I’ve spend thousands of dollars on + books from legendary portrait photographers like Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Albert Watson, Arnold Newman.

Due out in May, his book, Heroes: A Tribute, commemorates 50 creative pioneers — including Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring, Rudolf Nureyev and Freddie Mercury — who were victims of the disease during the height of the epidemic.

Roth later became photographer to the film industry and made portraits of James Dean, Ava Gardner, and dozens of others. His photographs, which appeared in Life, Paris-Match, etc., are photojournalistic and new to today's audience.4/5(1). From the Inside Flap.

The Fifties is a sweeping social, political, economic, and cultural history of the ten years that Halberstam regards as seminal in determining what our nation is today. Halberstam offers portraits of not only the titans of the age: Eisenhower Dulles, Oppenheimer, MacArthur, Hoover, and Nixon, but also of Harley Earl, /5().

50 Portraits is my favorite portrait photography book ever. Yes, I recommend it over every Irving Penn or Richard Avedon book, at least if you want actionable tips on being a better portrait photographer.

It includes 50 of Gregory Heisler's best portraits, and the stories behind them. The s were a time of prosperity, leading to a boom in the arts.

From glamorous Hollywood movie stars to the birth of rock and roll, some of the most recognizable pop culture icons like Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe emerged in this decade. Celebrate your favorite part of the '50s with one of our fun and unique paintings.

Heisler's "50 Portraits" is exactly that sort of book. Though you can get the technical info by digging into the back, you would totally miss the best this book has to offer in doing so.
